Below is a model for a sculpture, designed in Maya 8.5, already submitted to a stone sculpture symposium, for a 1,5 m height realization in marble.

However, I decided to bring this to life by using rapid prototyping and 3D printing services. Shapeways is a new service, where one can upload a file to the Shapeways website and order the printed model.

Above you can see the solid model as it appears on the Shapeways website. Below is the 3D printed model that arrived today.

What's really great with Shapeways is that you can instantly calculate the price of your 3D printed model on their website, so, if your model goes very expensive, you can always scale it down and make its price affordable (I had an offer of about $ 840 from another 3D printing services company, to print it in a 20 cm scale).
